WHAT IS ONCOFERTILITY?

It's called oncofertility - a new term coined by Dr. Teresa Woodruff of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine - meaning fertility preservation for young cancer patients.

Her research in reproductive endocrinology has increased awareness of fertility management and the role it plays in quality of life for the increasing number of women who are also young cancer survivors.

In a wide ranging interview with Northwestern University’s Medill school Reports, in Chicago, Dr Woodruff says ''Oncofertility involves all the dimensions of a patient’s decision process and the provider’s information. It is the ethics, the law, the religious constraints..of fertility management'

DO YOU REALLY NEED FERTILITY TREATMENT?

Geoffrey Sher, co-founder and Executive Medical Director of the Sher Institutes for Reproductive Medicine (SIRM), has written a fascinating blog, about a study published online in the journal Fertility and Sterility which claims that about 44% of 7, 000 Australian women aged 28-36 years who said they had experienced difficulty conceiving for at least a year, subsequently achieved a pregnancy without having to undergo any type of fertility treatment.

The authors concluded that almost half of “infertile” women in this age category probably don't need treatment.

But, says Dr. Sher, it's not as simple or straightforward as that.

REDUCED FERTILITY FROM LEAD AND CADIUM IN BLOOD

publication date: Feb 16, 2012

High blood levels of cadmium in women and high levels of lead in men, can make it difficult for couples to conceive, according to a new report in an upcoming print issue of the journal Chemosphere.

Cadmium is a metal that is used in batteries, metal coatings and plastics, but the most common source of cadmium exposure is cigarette smoke. Common sources of exposure to lead in the United States include lead-based paints in older homes, some lead-glazed pottery, and contaminated soil and water.

The new study included 501 couples in Michigan and Texas who were trying to conceive. The couples were followed for up to one year, or until pregnancy was confirmed. The women were aged 18 to 44 and the men were all older than 18.

Using statistical measurements of the participants' blood concentration of the metals, the investigators found that, in the women, the probability of pregnancy was reduced by 22 percent with each increase in the blood cadmium concentration.

In men, the probability of conceiving was reduced by 15 percent for each increase in their blood lead concentration.

"Our results indicate that men and women planning to have children should minimize their exposure to lead and cadmium," said Dr. Germaine Buck Louis, director of the division of epidemiology, statistics and prevention research at the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

"They can reduce cadmium exposure by avoiding cigarettes or by quitting if they are current smokers, especially if they intend to become pregnant in the future.

Similarly, they can take steps to reduce their exposure to lead-based paints, which may occur in older housing, including during periods of home renovation," Louis advised.

While the study uncovered an association between higher concentrations of these metals in blood and decreased fertility, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
